Fix your spotify sound problems in wine

Pulse AudioPulse audio in Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala has problems playing back sound. This is tragically evident when trying to listen to music using Spotify via wine, it distortly plays one song before giving up and crashing.

But a certain Neil Wilson has a fix for this! He’s added native support to a modified version of wine 1.2 and made it available via his PPA storage. This fix is said to work for spotify but not all audio problems under wine.

First uninstall the old version of wine, then add and install Neil’s. Finally open up winecfg and make sure to use pulseaudio for playback.

sudo aptitude remove wine

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:neil-aldur/ppa

sudo aptitude update

sudo aptitude install wine1.2

winecfg

    Wow, seems to work. Awesome.

Worked like a charm! I had almost given up on making Spotify work when I found this post. Great!

  3. Worked for me, but not if I selected PulseAudio in the Audio tab of winecfg, I had to select ALSA.

Also, if you’ve previously been using a solution involving ‘padsp’, don’t forget to remove it from your shortcuts.
